Assai antica ed illustre famiglia napoletana, la quale godette di nobiltà nel Seggio di Nido e che risulta ascritta, in tutti i suoi rami, al Libro d'Oro napoletano. Feudataria dall'epoca normanna, decorata dei più illustri Ordini Cavallereschi, quali il Toson d'Oro, il Reale Ordine di S. Gennaro e la Gran Croce di S. Ferdinando e del Merito, ebbe uno dei sette Grandi Uffici del Regno. Le prime memorie di essa risalgono al 1094, epoca nella quale il Pontefice Urbano II ricompensa Ugone S., che erasi portato in Terra Santa a combattere per la Fede, unitamente ai suoi figliuoli Filippo e Giacomo. L'Aldimari riporta, pure, Adinolfo, vivente al tempo dell'imperatore Federico II, nipote di Tommaso, conte dell'Acerra. Vivevano, fin dai tempi della dominazione normanna, due famiglie di questo cognome entrambe feudatarie: quella vivente in Napoli era detta anche "di Somma", per aver feudi presso la terra di Somma al Monte Vesuvio; ...
