Non si hanno notizie precise sull'epoca di fondazione; si sa solo che i Pelasgi la fortificarono con una solida cinta di mura, di cui tutt'oggi si ammirano, dopo ben oltre tre millenni, i resti grandiosi. Conquistata dagli Etruschi ed in seguito dai Romani, venne prima ridotta a colonia, poscia elevata a municipio, e nel 326 dopo Cristo dichiarata metropoli. Per la sua importante posizione strategica dovette dolorosamente subire continui e cruenti attacchi da quanti mirarono a conquistare Roma, donde l'alterna vicenda di distruzione e di riedificazione delle sue mura vetuste.
