La prima memoria che si abbia di questa nobile famiglia, detta anticamente Mazzi, rimonta al 1159 e si riferisce dad un Drudo di Albertino Mazzi. Nel 1458 dotò essa una cappella nella chiesa di S. Francesco, e verso la stessa epoca cominciò a lasciare il cognome Mazzi mutandolo in quello di Quarantini da un Quarantino vivente circa il 1400. Mazio, figlio del suddetto Quarantino, era ascritto fra gli anziani di Faenza. Un altro Quarantino e Lattanzio, figli di Francesco, nel 1592 vestirono l'abito dei Cavalieri di S. Stefano di Toscana. Tali sono i principii, che da sopracitati Autori si diedero a questa famiglia, ma per esser questo fatto assai remoto, e d'historia molto lontana, lasciamo perciò a più eruditi delle sacre antichità, e dell'historie l'investigarne il suo certo principio.
