La nobilissima Famiglia de’ Tampieri trae le sue vetuste origini dalla terra feconda e illustre dell’Emilia-Romagna, donde, nei secoli, s’è propagata con onore e decoro in varie contrade del Regno d’Italia. È opinione diffusa tra gli eruditi che il cognome “Tampieri” derivi dall’antico nome latino “Tampierius”, e che il primo a portarne con dignità il vessillo fosse un certo Tampierius Paulo, vissuto nella città di Faenza nel secolo XIV, uomo di probità e valore. Le memorie dei nobili membri di tal casato si rinvengono in testi storici e atti solenni sin dal secolo XVII, a testimonianza della loro costante presenza nei più alti consessi della vita civile e religiosa. In un testamento redatto nel XVIII secolo in Faenza da Scipione Zanelli, si legge con reverenza: «... primo presidente prò tempore del venerabile ospitale del Santissimo Crocifisso degli orfani di Faenza, che sarà perpetuo del sig. cavalier Sebastiano Tampieri, del sig. abate don Antonio Laghi, parroco di Santa Croce, e del presente parroco di San Savino...».
