Originaria di Borgo S. Lorenzo, prese il cognome da un Villano figlio di Stoldo di Bollicine, il primo di cui si trovano memorie in Firenze. Figli di Stoldo furono i celebri Giovanni e Matteo, il primo de' quali fu de' priori nel 1317, 1321 e 1328, maestro di zecca e che nel 1325 si trovò presente alla battaglia di Altopascio, e fu autore delle sue celebratissime storie continuate dopo la sua morte dal fratello Matteo, i cui figli Filippo e Giovanni.
