La nobile e antica famiglia Vota trae le sue origini dalla magnifica e gloriosa città di Genova, culla di illustri casati e di uomini insigni per virtù e valore. Stabilitasi in Sicilia, godette di nobiltà e di onorevoli privilegi in diverse città dell’isola, tra le quali primeggiano Messina e Siracusa, oltre ad altre terre di non minore importanza. Le cronache del tempo tramandano i nomi di distinti membri di questa famiglia, i quali, con il loro operato, seppero accrescere il lustro e la considerazione del casato. Un certo Giovanni Nicolò, uomo di elevata condizione e di provata saggezza, ricoprì la prestigiosa carica di senatore nella città di Messina nell’anno del Signore 1437-1438, rendendosi meritevole agli occhi dei suoi concittadini. Un altro Giovanni, forse il medesimo o forse suo discendente, fu anch’egli eletto alla medesima dignità nell’anno 1468-1469, segno evidente della continuità del prestigio della famiglia nelle istituzioni cittadine. Un Santoro, il cui nome appare nei documenti anche nella forma Voltis, si distinse nella città di Siracusa, ove, nell’anno 1500-1501, esercitò con onore e rettitudine l’ufficio di giurato, carica di grande responsabilità e di non lieve peso. Un Francesco, degno rappresentante della sua stirpe, fu elevato alla dignità di proconservatore nella Contea di Modica nell’anno 1575, segno della costante presenza della famiglia nelle alte sfere del governo locale. Nel fluire dei secoli e nel mutare delle consuetudini, come sovente accadeva nei tempi anteriori all’istituzione dell’anagrafe italiana, si riscontrano variazioni nella grafia e nella pronuncia di questo illustre cognome, che appare talvolta nelle forme "Volta", "La Vota" o "Li Voti", senza che ciò ne alteri la sostanza né ne diminuisca la nobiltà. ...
