La famiglia Zandonella è assai antica, originaria del territorio di Cadore, ottenne il cavalierato ereditario nel 1444 con un Gianni di Donella detto anche Zanni di Donella da cui è derivato il cognome Zandonella. Riprando della Donella nel 1238 era console del Comune di Vicenza, e nel 1264 Guariento fu uno dei riformatori del patrio statuto. Nel 1290 Enrico, di fazione ghibellina, fu uno di quelli che uniti a Giordano Sarego avevano trattato di scacciare i Padovani dalla città, e fu impiccato. Varie famiglie omonime si propagarono in diverse regioni d'Italia. Le notizie bibliografiche che ci vengono tramandate sono riconducibili a questa casata di cui ne abbiamo tratto nota.
