La nobilissima famiglia Zappino si ritiene avere antichissime origini lucane, trasportata poi in terra di Sicilia nei gloriosi tempi del re Alfonso d'Aragona, per opera di un valoroso Giovanni Antonio, il quale, nell’anno del Signore 1454, si dice tenesse l’ufficio di castellano di Cosenza e, successivamente, fosse eletto capitano d’armi del Val di Mazzara, in quella medesima isola. Nel corso dei secoli, molti furono gli uomini illustri di tal casato che si distinsero per onore e virtù. Un Antonino Zappino fu senatore nella città di Palermo negli anni 1636 e 1637. Un altro, il nobile Francesco, per matrimonio contratto con la gentilissima Lucia Termini, divenne barone di Oliveri, e fu anch’egli più volte senatore di Palermo negli anni 1693-94, 1708-09, 1710-11, 1712-13, e in altre occasioni degnamente ricordate. Giovanni Zappino e Termini, anch’egli barone di Oliveri, seguì le orme dei suoi avi, esercitando l’ufficio senatoriale negli anni 1715-16, 1721-22-23, 1728-29-30, 1731-32, 1733-34-35 e in molte altre tornate, sempre con decoro e saviezza.
