Heraldic trace of family: Zummo
Ancient and noble Sicilian family, known as Zummo or Zumbo, of clear and ancestral virtue, with residence in Messina, Palermo and Syracuse, that has worldwide spread, over the centuries. Moreover, this family, in all ages, always stands out, thanks to the prominent figures, which gave birth, in the public service, in the liberal and ecclesiastical professions and in the military service. Among these, without undervalue the omitted, we would like to mention: Giaimo who, in 1450, was notary master of the stratcial court of Messina; Bartolomeo Zumbo, Baron of Cava and noble of Syracuse in 1491; another Giaimo, who, on February 22, 1506, obtained investiture of the fief of Cava in Syracuse; Scipione who in the year 1547-48 held the position of sworn in Syracuse in 1519-20; Vincenzo, senator in 1545; Giovanni sworn in Syracuse in 1562-63; Francesco sworn in Syracuse in 1573-74; Gaspare sworn in Syracuse in 1599-1600; Fr... Raimo, knight of the Gerosolimitano Order in 1594; Giovanni was jury and sworn in 1629; another Francesco was senator in Palermo in 1642-43 and a Giuseppe held the same charge in that city in 1670-71. From the analysis of colours and symbols of the coat of arms we can have more information about the family virtues. The tincture azure symbolizes water, the continuity of life, it is a colour of nobility, beauty, chastity and fidelity; the tincture red ("gules") is the symbol of strength, power but also fervent love for God and neighbour; the star symbolizes celestial goodness, leadership and excellence; gold ("or") is the more noble metal, a symbol of wealth, power and control. Family names so old, without any doubt honour not only families but also the cities that welcomed them; seems to be, in fact, very worthy the living members of this family which, with much decorum, carry this noble surname, which has had several illustrious members.
