ABBATE | ABBATI

Abbate is Panitalian, has a large nucleus in Sicily and one in Campania, but is present practically all over Italy, Abbati has a nucleus in Parma and Modena, one in Perugia and one in Rona, deriving from a nickname originated or from connections with the function of abbot (in charge of a monastery) or of particular attitude. These surnames are very old, as can be seen from this act preserved in the Chapter Archive of S. Ambrogio in Milan among the Parchments of the XII century, where we read: "... Dominico qui dicitur Abbate, filius quondam Iohannis de civitate Mediolani ut amodo in antea omni tempore defendere et guarendere et in antea stare debet ipse Iohannes et sui heredes eidem Dominico et suis heredibus et derives a Abbate family from a Roman knight Papyrus who, after giving his son Ascanio all his possessions, retired to the monastery of Montecassino where he was elected abbot. In this family we find Troiano Abbate baron of Gibellina who was senator of Palermo in the years 1499 and 1500; a Gabriele baron of Ucria, a title confirmed on 16 July 1453 and a Giacomo captain of justice in Palermo in 1581. Ignazio Vincenzo Abbate bought the title of marquis of Lungarini on 15 July 1723.
