ABBRESCIA | ABRESCIA

Abbrescia would seem to be specific to Bari, but it is widespread throughout Puglia and has a stock also in Trieste, Abrescia, less widespread, has a stock in Bari and one in Altamura (BA). additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi Originally from Albania, these surnames derive from an Italianization of the term Arbëreshë or Arbresha, which in Albanian means precisely Albanian (for a more detailed explanation of the origin of the surname, see the surname Brescia); although not completely excludable, however, a connection with the toponym Brescia is quite unlikely, both because of the distance between the main nucleus of Abbrescia families and the almost homonymous Lombard city and because of the literal structure of the term abbrescia (it is true that it could be a prosthetic form of the toponym Brescia, but in the context of toponymy it is difficult to justify such a hypothesis).
