Allais is typically Piedmontese, from Turin in particular, from Avigliana, Coazze, Turin and Giaveno, it should be of French origin and derive from the French female medieval name Allais, Alais, an altered contracted form of the medieval Francogermanic Adalhaid, in turn originated from the union of the medieval Germanic terms adal (noble) and haid, heide (earth, steppe, heath), with the sense of one who is of noble origins, but a possible connection with an alteration of the Provençal name Alas cannot be excluded. (see ALLASIA).
