Alpa is typical of the area that includes the Alexandrian and the Genoese, in particular Alessandria and Ovada in the Alessandria area and Genoa, it could derive from an archaic nickname, based on the now disused term alpa, an ancient cutting instrument used to produce curls of willow wood used to stuff chairs, much less likely a derivation from a dialectal form of the term alpe (mountain pasture).
