ANNIBALDI | ANNIBALE | ANNIBALI | ANNIBALINI | ANNIBALINO | ANNIBALLO

Hannibal, very rare seems to be of Campania origins even though it may have a secondary lineage in the Venetian dialect, Annibali and Annibaldi are typical of central Italy, Annibalini is specific to Pesaro, Pesaro, Fano and Gabicce Mare, Annibalino, practically unique, it would seem Roman , Anniballo, extremely rare, could be from Campania. They should all derive, directly or through hypocorisms, from the Punic name Hannibal or from the Byzantine Hannibalianus. Traces of this cognomen are found as early as 300 AD with the emperor Flavius Hannibalianus son of Flavius Dalmatius and grandson of the emperor of Illyrian origin Flavius Valerius Constantius. In 1350 we find Cardinal Annibaldo da Ceccano, prince of Avignon, as legate of the Roman Pope Clemente VI. The Annibaldi family, divided into 3 stocks: della Molara, Montecompatri and Zancato, had numerous senators and cardinals, among its most famous sons it includes Cardinal Riccardo della Molara, who takes the name of the homonymous fortress near Tuscolo, his usual residence. In the biography of Petrarch, among his friends, we meet Paolo Annibaldi. St. Thomas Aquinas dedicates part of his Aurea Chain to Annibaldo Annibaldi, in Rome, in the Basilica of S. Maria in Trastevere, the mausoleum of Cardinal Pietro Annibaldi (? -1414) is preserved.
