ASCIONE | ASCONE | ASCONI

Ascione has a large Campania stock, mostly in the Neapolitan, one in Rome and southern Lazio and one in the Sassari area, Ascone has a Calabrian nucleus in the Reggio area of Cittanova, Rosarno, Taurianova, Limbadi and Rizziconi, and a small stock in the Salerno area of Sassano, Asconi, practically unique, is due to an error of transcription of the previous one, they should all derive from the Latin nomen Asconius of which we have an example in Quintus Asconius Pedianus (9a.C - 76d.C.) grammatical and historical Roman, but it could also derive from a nickname originated from the Greek verb askeo (to cultivate) and would indicate a peasant origin of the family.
