Bucchicchio, extremely rare, would appear to be from the area between Theatine and Campobasso, Buchicchio has a stock in Rome, one in the Foggia area in Cerignola and Casalnuovo Monterotaro, and one in the Potentino area in Anzi, Potenza and Bella. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi Of origin arbëreshë, the surnames Buchicchio and Bucchicchio are born as variants of the surnames Bochicchio and Bocchicchio, which, most of the times, reflect an Italianization of the Albanian surname Bozhiqi (for a more detailed explanation, see Bocchicchio and Buscicchi ): for greater clarity, in fact, it should be noted that the ancient documents report the surname in the form Bosichio - for example, a certain Vreto Bosichio was a chief of the stradioti in the first half of the sixteenth century - and, in this sense, the transformation into Bochicchio and in its variants it is probably due to a popular adaptation of the surname Bosichio (following a paretimological combination with the word mouth). Having said this, however, it should be added that, in central and central-northern Italy, the surnames Bocchicchio, Bochicchio and Buchicchio are not necessarily of the surnames arbëreshë, but rather their origin could be sought in the medieval name Bocca (with a variant in Bocco), of which there are several testimonies in ancient documents (see Boccacci): in this case, in fact, the suffix -icchio would simply assume a hypocoristic value (deriving from the Latin -iculus), as often happens in central-northern surnames.
