additions by Stefano Ferrazzi Cafassi, unique, is found only in Settala (MI), Cafasso, much more widespread, has two main stocks, one of the Neapolitan, the Avellino and the Salerno and the other between the Turin, Vercelli and the Asti area, Cafazza, almost unique, is present exclusively in the Trapani area and in Carrara (MS), Cafazzo, quite rare, has a greater nucleus between the Avellino area and the Foggia area, all these surnames derive from the medieval name Cafasso, the Italianization, that is, of the Greek personal Kaiaphas: it is, in reality, a name of Aramaic origin, made known in the New Testament through the figure of Yhosef Bar Kayafa, one of the judges, that is, who participated in the trial of Jesus. more recent, a prominent figure was the Piedmontese priest Giuseppe Cafasso (born in Castelnuovo d'Asti in 1811 and died in Turin in 1860), who, canonized in 1947 and proclaimed patron of the condemned to death, is today remembered as St. Joseph Cafasso. Regarding the surnames in question, it is still the surnames of the personal names of the founders.
