CAFFARATA | CAFFARATI | CAFFARATO

Caffarata, absolutely rare, typically Ligurian, would seem to originate from La Spezia, Caffarati, almost unique, and Caffarato, which would seem unique, should be due to incorrect transcriptions of the previous one, which should be of Provençal origin and derive from dialectal alterations of the Occitan term cafroth, cafarot (small crevice or grotto), perhaps identifying characteristics of the place of origin of the progenitor, a second hypothesis, less probable, proposes a connection with the ancient medieval French term cafre (leper).
