Calati should originate from Lecce and Sicily, Calato has a very small stock in Naples and one more consistent in the Palermo area at Vicari and Palermo, it could be a dialectal alteration of the surname Galati (see GALATI), or a transcription error by northern registry officers, but there is also the concrete possibility that in many cases it may derive from nicknames originated from the Latin term calathus, in turn derived from the Greek kalathos, a kind of basket-shaped vase, perhaps to indicate the potters' ancestors.
