Calcara is a typical surname of western Sicily, of Castelvetrano and Mazara del Vallo in the Trapani area and of Palermo and Caccamo in the Palermo area, it should derive from places such as Calcara di Panarea, typical for thermal springs and fumaroles, or as Cala Calcara di Levanzo in the Egadi, but it is much more likely to derive from the fact that the family lives near a limestone, a Sicilian dialectal voice for lime or chalk kiln, or because they themselves are producers of lime or plaster.
