Etymological origin of Italian surname: Cantero

CANTERA | CANTERO

Cantera, very very rare, is typical of the area that includes the Roman, the Aquila and the Pescara area. Cantero is almost unique, the probable origin is from the Cantoria people, that is the canteri or church singers, who, in the border area between the Roman and the Aquila, they had acquired a particular social importance in the papal court, arriving at obtaining the political control of some countries, another possible hypothesis is that these surnames can derive from the fact of being attributed as nicknames to the wealthy, who, to distinguish themselves from the rest of the people, attended religious services in the so-called cantoria, that is, in the area of the church reserved for the cantors.
