Etymological origin of Italian surname: Cantone

CANTONE

Cantone has a strain perhaps originating in the Lodigiano, Cremona and Mantua, in the north-western Lombardy and in the north-eastern Piedmont, it has a strain between Caserta and Neapolitan and one in Sicily, especially in the Catania area, should derive from the medieval name Cantonus of which we have an example in a Carta finis et refutationis causa transactionis of 1174 to Prada (LO): "... iuxta legem un cum noticia de propinquioribus parentibus suis, hii sunt Carnelvalis et Belonus de Vailathe, propinqui suprascripte Bilie, et Cantonus et Dominicus, propinqui suprascripte Zusiane, et Goizo, pater suprascripte Berlende, et Lanfrancus Gerbilinus, propinquus ... ", in 1200 we find a Cantonus de Cantono councilor of the city government of Mantua.
