Carena has a Lombard and a Piedmontese stock, the Lombard stock should derive from the toponym Carena in the Valle Morobbia region in Switzerland. on the Swiss front of the Lario, a noble family that became extinct with Count Carlo Francesco Carena, whose family had exercised the Signoria in 1711 between two towns in Alta Brianza, Annone and Merone, near Lecco, the surname was not extinguished on that occasion because the Emperor Charles VI of Habsburg allowed the only daughter of Count Rosa Carena married to an Aliprandi to transfer to the first male heir both the surname and the title and the feud.
