Etymological origin of Italian surname: Carillo

CARIELLO | CARILLO

Cariello is typical of the Campania area, especially of the San Giovanni a Piro, Roccagloriosa, Buccino and Salerno and Naples areas, with a large stock that would appear to be primary in the Bari area of Bitonto, Barletta, Altamura and Bari, Carillo is specifically from Campania Neapolitan, of San Giuseppe Vesuviano, Terzigno, Ottaviano, Naples, Torre del Greco, Torre Annunziata, Poggiomarino, Boscoreale, Castellammare di Stabia, Nola and Sant'Antonio Abate, and of Sarno, Salerno and Scafati in the Salerno area, these should be modifications dialectal of the medieval hypocoristic name Carellus (see CARELLA), but it is also possible that it derives from the dialectal term carroello (cart) identifying the carter trade carried out by the progenitor, a reference that makes us consider this hypothesis concrete, we find it in an inventory of goods post mortem of 1609 in Solofra (AV): "..Item, from Prospero de Angelo of the Cariello Guarino ducats 3 for obligation ...".
