Carrata, almost unique, would seem to be specific of the Bari area. Carrato has presences in the Neapolitan and Salerno areas, and an extremely rare strain in Mazara del Vallo in the Trapani area, belonging to the Salerno area, Carratù is typically from the Campania region of Mercato San Severino, Cava de 'Tirreni, Salerno, San Giorgio Castle, San Marzano sul Sarno, Roccapiemonte, Nocera Inferiore and Nocera Superiore, of Naples, of Montoro Inferiore nell'avellinese and of Aversa in the Caserta area, all these surnames should derive from nicknames based on the southern archaic dialect cart, a unit of measure for the wine corresponding to a small barrel or a large quarter barrel.
