Casella is widespread throughout Italy, Caselle is specific to the area around Potenza, Melfi and Barile in particular, typical of Emilia and Toscana Caselli, and should all derive from toponyms such as: Casella (GE) - (TV), Caselle (VR) - ( TV) - (BO) - (SA) - (LO), Casellina di Scandicci (FI) or from the name of medieval funds such as this mentioned in a Cartula offertionis, investiture et concessionis mentioned in the Diplomatic Code of Medieval Lombardy in Pavia in the year 1177: "... offerto predicta monasterio nominative meam personam et insuper omnes illas terras iuris mei quas habere videor in loco et fundo Caselli et in eius territory, ...".
