Two strains of Castano are identified, one in the province of Matera and one in the province of Messina, while Castanò would appear to be specific to the province of Catanzaro, in particular Montepaone, Cortale, Soverato and Gasperina, and should derive from the late medieval name Castanus. additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli Castano, surname Lucano, Sicilian, Calabrese and Salento.
