Castaldi is present throughout Italy, with particular concentration in the provinces of Varese, Ferrara, Florence, Lazio and Campania, Castaldo is decidedly Campania, of Caserta and Neapolitan in particular, Castoldi is Lombard from Pavia. All these surnames derive from nicknames originated from the word gastaldo, from the Longobard gastald, which originally had the meaning of territorial administrator elected by the King who entrusted him with civil, military and judicial powers, then became synonymous with property administrator or factor.
