Etymological origin of Italian surname: Catterina

CATTERINA

Absolutely rare, very few specimens are present only in Lombardy, it would seem specific to the province of Brescia, and should derive at this point from the Germanic name Catharina, but it is more likely that this is a different writing of the surname Caterina (Catterina was an archaic equivalent form to Caterina) and, at this point, the surname would have southern origins and would therefore derive either from the Greek name. Caterina or from a toponym such as: San Caterina Albanese (CS), Santa Caterina (LE) or Santa Caterina dello Ionio and Marina ( CZ).
