Etymological origin of Italian surname: Centonza

CENTONZA | CENTONZE | CENTONZI

Centonza is specific of the Foggia area, of Lesina and ManfredoniaCentonze is present throughout Italy there seem to be more areas of origin: Puglie with Lecce in particular and the Trapani area, Centonzi is practically unique. They could derive from a nickname linked to an episode in which the word or concept of a hundred ounces occurs. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi Centonza, rare, has a main nucleus in the Foggia area, Centonze, present from north to south of the country, has its epicenter in Puglia, between Lecce, Bari and Brindisi, but important stocks are also found in the Matera, in the Trapani area and, to a lesser extent, in the Ennese area, Centonzi, almost unique, is found exclusively in the Taranto and Trapani areas, all these surnames derive from the medieval name Centonze, attributed to the newborn as a wish for wealth: the origin of this the name, in fact, must be sought in the expression hundred ounces, in which the term ounce indicates an ancient coin very widespread in medieval Italy and, in this context, therefore, the number one hundred must be understood in a hyperbolic sense to indicate a large quantity of ounces (see also Centoducati). As far as the surnames in question are concerned, therefore, these are the surnames of the personal names of the founders.
