Etymological origin of Italian surname: Chersoni


CHERSONI

Chersoni is typical of Ferrara, Bologna, Bologna and Ferrara, it should be founders of Byzantine origin and the surname should derive from the ancient Byzantine city of Chersona, the present-day Sevastopol in Ukraine, although a derivation from the term Chersonesus, from the Greek chersónesos, composed of chersos (dry land) and nesos (island), with this name the Greeks identified various areas: the Chersonese Taurico was the Crimean peninsula, in Ukraine; the Chersonese Tracico was the peninsula of Gallipoli in Thrace, situated between the Hellespont and the gulf of Salonicco in the Aegean Sea, in Turkey, probably with the loss of these territories from part of the Roman empire of east, perhaps following the descent of the Huns, or later of the Turks, some refugees took refuge in the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna.
