Etymological origin of Italian surname: Chiocchio

CHIOCCHIO

Chiocchio has an Abruzzese stock in Cocullo nell'aquilano and one in Rome, the etymological origin is controversial, the simplest hypothesis proposes a derivation from the name of the village of Chiocchio, a fraction of the town of Greve in Chianti in Florence, a second hypothesis proposes the derivation from a nickname based on the Latin term cochlea (snail), a third hypothesis proposes the derivation from a dialect nickname based on a term for dripping, even if this seems to be the least probable hypothesis, we find traces of this surname in the Rieti area, in the first half of the 1600s, with a Septimius Chiocchio mentioned in a deed of donation.
