Etymological origin of Italian surname: Chiriaco

Chiriaco is from Calabria, from Catanzaro, Crotone and Maida (CZ), Chiriacò is typical of the Salento area, of Sternatia, Lecce and Cutrofiano in the Lecce area and of Brindisi. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi the origin of these surnames is to be found in the medieval name Chiriaco, which, together with the Chiriacò variant, arises from an adaptation of the Greek personal Kyriakos, meaning devotee to the Lord (this is the Greek equivalent of the name Domenico ): from the etymological point of view, in fact, the name Kyriakos is composed of the term Kyrios (Lord) with the addition of the suffix -akos, of adjectival value (to indicate a relationship of belonging, even in a figurative sense). Having said this, however, a clarification must be made about the Chiriaco and Chiriacò surnames: considering their geographical distribution, these families seem to have either a lineage arbëreshë (more probably Greek-Albanian) or a grika origin, especially in the Reggio and Lecce areas. In conclusion, therefore, these are the surnames of the personal names of the founders.
