Cigagna, extremely rare, is of the border area between the provinces of Treviso and Pordenone, of obscure origins, it could derive from a dialectal nickname of the surname Cigana, which, widespread in the Pordenone area to Pasiano di Pordenone, Sacile and Prata di Pordenone, Torre di Must in the Venetian and Mottadi Livenza and Gaiarine in the Treviso area, it seems to have originated from a medieval alteration of the Croatian term ciganoj (gypsy), or even from a modification of the Romanian surname Cicanea, but the latter hypothesis is much less likely, a an important trace of this surname is found in Motta di Livenza in the Treviso area, in 1401, when the Madonna appeared to the peasant Giovanni Cigagna, according to some, or Cigana, according to others, asking that a church be built there, which happened in the century following.
