Etymological origin of Italian surname: Colucelli

COLUCCELLI | COLUCCELLO | COLUCELLI | COLUCELLO

Coluccelli is typical of the Foggia area, of Ascoli Satriano and in particular, Coluccello, more rare, is from Salento, Brindisi and Morciano Di Leuca in Lecce, Colucelli is almost unique, Colucciello is typical of Campania, of Naples and of Avellino. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi The origin of these surnames is to be found in the medieval name Coluccello, born or from the union of the names Nicola and Uccello (see Birds) or from the nickname of the medieval name Coluccio, which in turn should derive from a hypocoristic of the name Nicola (this last hypothesis seems to be the most probable, if we consider the high diffusion of the surname Colucci in southern Italy). As far as the surnames in question are concerned, therefore, these are the surnames of the personal names of the founders.
