Etymological origin of Italian surname: Condorelli

CONDORELLI

Condorelli is typically Sicilian, specific to Catania, Catania and Misterbianco in particular, but also to Acireale, Paternò, Gravina di Catania, Motta Sant'Anastasia, Mascalucia, San Giovanni la Punta, Aci Castello and Tremestiere Etneo, with a stock also Gela in the nisseno, should derive from an Italianized hypocoristic form of the Greek term chondròs (big, paunchy), an alteration of the ancient Greek root kontos (short, short), which also constitutes a second derivation hypothesis, while the hypothesis of a derivation from the ancient Greek word kontoforos (armed with lance or lancere) does not seem to be acceptable. (see also CONDO 'and CONDRO)
