Etymological origin of Italian surname: Coneglian

CONEGLIAN | CONEGLIANI | CONEGLIANO

Coneglian, absolutely rare, is typically Venetian, of the Rovigoto in particular, Conegliani and Conegliano are almost unique and should be due to alterations of the previous surname made by registry officers, who probably interpreted the termination in -an of the surname as an error due to a dialectal pronunciation, a surname that obviously derives from the Venetian name of the Trevisano village of Conegliano. We find traces of these surnames in the 1700s with the furrier Iseppo Conegliano, the Jewish community in Conegliano between 1600 and 1700 was very flourishing, towards the end of the 1700s we find the Jew Emanuele Conegliano, Opera librettist who later converted to Christianity.
