Contaldi and Contaldo are typical of the Salerno area on the border with the Neapolitan dialect, although Contaldo seems to have a stock also in Salento, Contardo is specific to the Udine area and Contardi is typical of central and southern Lombardy, all these surnames derive from the Lombard name Gunthard, also in use by the Normans. We have traces in Lombardy of the use of this name, since 1100 with a Contardo de Butisino (Botticino (BS)), in the Pavia area, in 1200 we find the noble Este Contardo made then a saint.
