Etymological origin of Italian surname: Coppolino

Coppola is present throughout Italy, particularly widespread in the central south, Coppolina, absolutely rare, it would seem of the Messina, and is probably due to errors of transcription of Coppolino, decidedly Sicilian, particularly widespread in Messina, in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Messina, Milazzo and Castroreale, may derive from nicknames linked to the southern dialect word coppola (cap) or, in some cases they may derive from the word coppa, as a reference to an element present in the coat of arms of the family name. Since 1100 in Scala (SA) there are traces of a Coppola family, in 1255 Palmerio Coppola is judge of the city of Castellamare di Stabia.
