Corbascio is typically Pugliese, of Monopoli, Locorotondo and Castellana Grotte in the Bari area and of Fasano in the Brindisi area, it could derive from a nickname based on the Arabic term qurbash or on the Egyptian Arabic word korbasch, both indicate a particular type of whip with many tails of skin 'hippopotamus, an instrument used in ancient times to punish slaves on oars in Saracen ships.
