Cortelli has strains in Perugia, L'Aquila and Rome, Cortellini seems to have three stocks, in western Trentino, Milan and Teramo, they should derive from toponyms containing the root Corte, like Corte (TN), Corte de 'Cortesi (CR ), Corte Palasio (LO), Piano di Corte (TE), Santa Maria a Corte (AP), Casale della Corte (RM) or similar. Traces of this surname can be found in Cento (BO) in 1540, in the book Memoria Delle cose di Cento Raccolte from Il.mo Padre Don Biagio Bagni Centese where we read: "... the following year, a thousand five hundred forty alli noue di Genaro at two o'clock at night, the fire of the Rocca was lit, neither did the manner nor the cause, and, making great noise and damage, much people came to help, but the fury of the fire was so great that they could not to climb the stuff in the Cameslengo seruents, which were miserably burned, two were from Cento, Antonio, and Bastiano Cortellini, the third was forast ... ".
