Cotogni has a Roman stock, Cotogno, very rare, has a stock in Anzio, Cotugno is typically southern, with important stocks between the Isernia, Caserta, Benevento and Neapolitan and in particular Foggia, with presence however significant also in the Bari, Taranto and Matera and a strain between Reggio and Messina, should derive from locality names or from the presence of quince plants in the vicinity of the ancestors' house, but in some cases it cannot be excluded a derivation from nicknames originating from the Arabic term qutun (cotton), perhaps because the job of the founders had in some way connections with that textile fiber, Cotugno in many cases is of Spanish origin, deriving from the surname Cotu? o typical of the Toledo area.
