Curatola is typical of the Reggio area, Curatolo has a stock in the Gargano area of Cagnano Varano in the Foggia area and Sannicandro Garganico, and one in Sicily in Caltanissetta and Marsala in the Trapani area, Del Curatolo and Delcuratolo are specific to Barletta and Trani in the Bari area. they should derive, directly or through a patronymic form where the prefix Delia for the son of, referring to a progenitor whose father fulfilled the task of steward, should in fact derive all from alterations of the Byzantine term kourator (steward).
The Curatolo, absolutely rare, should be due to an incorrect transcription of Locuratolo, which is typical of the area between Bari and Potentino, of Bari and Minervino Murge in the Bari area and of Melfi and Potenza in the Potenza area, and which should derive from the Calabrese dialectal term curatolo, in turn derived from the Greek Byzantine term kourator (steward), indicating the person responsible for a farm or a cattle farm, a task probably carried out by the progenitor (see CURATOLA).
