Typical of Sardinia, it should derive from a modification in the Sardinian language of the Latin word fenum (hay), or from the Sardinian fenu (marsh grass), an extremely unlikely derivation from the Latin word fenus (interest), which in some cases may derive from an ancient toponym such as Nuraxi Fenu or Fenugheddu (OR).
