FERRIGNI | FERRIGNO

Ferrigni has an important stock in Bari and perhaps a secondary one in Naples, Ferrigno seems to have two stocks, one on the Campania coast and one in Sicily, they could derive from a variation of the name Normanno Ferry, or even from a nickname linked to the trade of blacksmith. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi Ferrigno, present throughout the country, is more typically southern, with major stocks in the Neapolitan, Salerno, Bari, Tarantino and practically the whole of Sicily, Ferrigni, much rarer than the previous, it has a main nucleus in the Bari area and a secondary one between the Neapolitan and Benevento area, but it is found at very low frequency in different parts of Italy, both these surnames derive from the medieval name Ferrigno, which must be understood in the figurative sense of strong, robust, resistant like iron; in some cases, however, a derivation from the same ferrigno adjective cannot be excluded, to indicate particular physical or behavioral characteristics. In any case, then, these are the surnames or personal names of the founders or their nicknames.
