Lanini is typically Tuscan from Florence and Scandicci in the Florentine, from Castel San Niccolò, Arezzo, San Giovanni Valdarno, Bibbiena, Loro Ciuffenna and Montevarchi in the Arezzo area, from Asciano in the Siena area and from Grosseto, with a stock in Genoa and one in Rome, Lanino, almost unique, has a very small Piedmontese stock, in Turin and Vercelli, and scattered presences in Tuscany and Lazio, Lannini, absolutely rare, has presences in the Roman dialect, Lannino is typically Sicilian, from Palermo, should derive, even dialectal alterations, from craft of wool maker that in medieval times was referred to as laninus, we find for example quoted in the Florentine Historia an Antonius Bartholi Lemmi laninus in the Registrum Vexilli Clavium Quarterii Sancti Iohannis septem Maiorum Artium of the day eight February 1381, there is also the possibility that it may derive from the Latin cognomen Laninus, probably a medieval form of the cognomen Ianinus, traces of these surnames can be found for example in Vercell i in 1500 with a certain Magister Bernardinus Laninus pictor.
