Lapi is typically Tuscan, of Florentine in particular, Lapetti is unique, Lapo is absolutely rare, Lapini is always Tuscan, specific to Florentine, Aretino, Pistoia and Sienese, Lapponi has a stock in Macerata and one in Rome, Lapucci it is also typically Tuscan, of Florence and Pisa, of the Florentine and of the Sienese, all these surnames should derive, directly or through various hypocoristic alterations, from the medieval name Lapus of which we have an example in the second half of 1200 in an act: " ... Pro Girolamo Beliocti Girolami, consignavit Lapus eius nepos et filius Berlinghieri umun equum pili nigri frontium balzanum de omnibus pedibus marcatum in right spatula ... ", name that should be due to a medieval hypocoristic contraction of the name Iacopus. We find traces of these surnames in Florence in 1600 with a certain "Ser Giovanni Lapi, notary of the merchandise".
