Leccese is essentially Apulian, but it also has significant stocks in Theatine and Molise, in the Roman and Latin dialects and in the high Campania, Leccesi, extremely rare, is in the area that includes the southern Marche and Rieti, almost unique, has a strain in Salento and one in the lower Lazio, Lecciso, very rare, is specific of Lecce, Liccese, equally rare, it would seem Lucan, all these surnames derive from various dialectal modifications of the ethnic form of Lecce, that is to say that the progenitor was a native of Lecce or its province, a non-negligible hypothesis makes it possible to consider also a connection with areas populated by holm oaks (quercus ilex), which would have characterized, in this case, the area where the family lived.
