Quite rare surnames Mottini is typical of Lombardy, more properly of the Northern Milanese, with a strain probably originating in the Sondri area, Mottin would seem to have two stocks, one in north-western Lombardy and one in the Vicenza area, they should derive from place names linked to the archaic word motta (mound of earth or debris). We find traces already from the end of the 1500s with the provost of origin Varesina Francesco Mottini who later became Bishop, with a Matteo Mottini was Pietro della Foppa dean of the municipality in Fusine (SO) in the early 1700s, heir of Antonio Mottini della Foppa was Maffeo the latter also the dean of the municipality in 1600.
