Ottavi has a stock in the Bolognese and Ravenna areas and is very widespread in the central belt that includes the Marche, Umbria and Lazio, in particular in Rome, Octavia, it would seem unique, could be from the Salerno area, Ottavio, very rare, has a very small stock in the Potentino and one in Briatico in the Vibo area, Ottavo, also very rare, is specific to the Caserta area, to Naples, in particular to Naples and to Maddaloni in the Caserta area, all these surnames could derive, in some cases, from the name of the Gens Octavia, the whose most illustrious exponent was certainly the Emperor Augustus, but, most probably, should derive from the custom, already present in Roman times, of attributing to the children the ordinal number of their appearance in the family, therefore the eighth child already in the pre-Christian era it was often called Octavius (eighth).
